Come on down for the launch of my new book 'Lyrical Lines'!
This book of drawings is a visual who’s who of Canada’s roots music scene in some of Winnipeg’s most venerable music venues.

I started drawing in sketchbooks at music shows almost ten years ago to keep myself busy when I wasn’t playing music on stage. This book is a compilation of my favorite drawings out of those sketchbooks. Like an old photograph holds a memory, these drawings have captured significant musical moments for me. Whether it’s a band’s final performance, or a songwriter playing to a full house, these scribbles are lyrical in that they pick up on the mood of the show.

Winnipeg Folk Festival Sculpture

I was asked to come up with a piece of art to commemorate the volunteers at the festival and to help raise money for some of the new and exciting changes that they're working on. We came up with this design, a tree cut from raw,recycled steel which has leaves that are engraved with names and captions from the volunteers. Look for it back stage at the festival!

Winnipeg launch of Contouring Quebec, a personal discovery of family roots and the author's own French identity through the art style of blind contour drawing. Born in St. Boniface, Culleton studied painting and drawing at the University of Manitoba, where he earned his BFA Honors in 1997. In 2006, he received a grant from the Conseil des arts et lettres du Quebec to rediscover his French roots using blind contour drawing and a Global Positioning System.

Contouring Québec

The Portage and District Arts Centre is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition Contouring Québec.
This exhibition showcases the drawings of Winnipeg artist James Culleton.

Contouring Québec is a biographical account of rediscovery through blind contour drawing. Contouring Québec focuses on the rediscovery of Culleton’s French roots and how he is connected to Québec. In this exhibition, Culleton explores his need to document, collect, and archive these drawings to understand his French identity. Using the technique of blind contour drawing and a Global Positioning System, Culleton has created a collection of work that documents his experiences in Québec culture.

The book titled Contouring Québec will be available for purchase at the exhibition. This book features Culleton’s drawings from 2005-2007, has a full color cover and 160 pages. $20 CDN / $20 CAN (available at the opening for $15). The book is also available online here
The exhibition runs from June 3rd to June 28th, 2008.
Opening Reception: Sunday June 8th, 2008, 2:00 – 3:30pm

Labyrinth Pathways

Here are some pictures of the Labyrinth that I built at the 2005 Winnipeg Folkfest. It was a lot of fun, and was crowd pleaser, especially with kids.. Hundreds of people walked its pathways. Next year I'm getting a helicopter shot!
